COVID-19 Could Spell Trouble for the 2021 NFL Season

Spell Trouble

Spell Trouble. The 2021-2022 season is rapidly approaching and it figures to be another fun-filled, exhilarating season.  That could change in a hurry, however, if COVID-19 causes problems for the NFL.  The 2020 season dealt with the COVID-19 by making schedule alterations to help the league thrive.  That won’t be the case this time around.

While zero games were missed last season, the league has made it abundantly clear that changes to the schedule won’t be made to accommodate a potential COVID-19 outbreak among unvaccinated players on a given team.  The team that endures the outbreak would be forced to forfeit the game, unlike last year where changes occurred so every team could play their standard slate of games.

The NFL has decided to take a much strong stand this season compared to last year. A player will be fined $14,650 for a violation of the COVID-19 protocol set forth by the league.  The punishment for a missed test is even more severe as the fine is raised to $50,000.  Following the league protocols will ensure the best safety for the organizations and fans.

The NFL Commissioner, Roger Goodell, has stressed the importance and necessity for players and coaches to get the vaccine to increase the safety and health of those around the league.  By most accounts, players have heeded to his desire to be vaccinated and have responded by following through to his wishes.

Currently, 90% of players are vaccinated around the league and have adhered to the request of health professionals and higher-ups in the league offices.  Nine of the thirty-two NFL teams have reached a vaccination rate of 95% or higher while twenty-seven teams have a vaccination rate of 85% or higher.  These players have done what is best for their health and safety, as well, as, the safety of their teammates, coaches, and fans.

These are encouraging numbers, but there are still issues that are arising around the league among players and coaches.  The Minnesota Vikings in particular are experiencing issues regarding COVID-19.  Rick Dennison, an assistant coach, has refused to get the vaccine and it has cost him his job.  Starting quarterback, Kirk Cousins, and backups Kellen Mond and Nate Stanley have been placed into the COVID-19 protocols.  They will miss crucial practice reps during training camp because they refuse to get vaccinated.  Star receiver of the Arizona Cardinals, DeAndre Hopkins, has also questioned how being unvaccinated could affect his teams based on his beliefs about the COVID-19 vaccine.

The 2021 season is going to be another interesting season that could have significant ramifications for teams around the league that aren’t cautious when it comes to COVID-19 and the damage it can do.  If teams are being careful and listening to the COVID-19 guidelines, the 2021 season should give the fans an exciting season without too much trouble.
